Lower fees
Mobile operators add a 3–7% surcharge when you pay with a foreign card on their app or website. Lightning fees are essentially zero. On USDT-TRC20 you pay ~$1 regardless of the amount. For a $50 top-up from abroad, you save several dollars every single time.
Cross-border access
You can recharge a Nigerian line from Paris without holding a Nigerian bank account or a foreign-friendly card. The crypto rails don't care about borders or KYC'd banking. This is the main use case for diaspora users sending airtime to family back home.
Privacy
A card top-up reveals your card number, name, and billing address to the operator or to a payment processor. A Lightning or Monero top-up reveals only the line you are recharging. Two top-ups from the same person are not linkable to each other.
When crypto is the wrong choice
Honesty matters more than marketing. Use a card or local bank app if:
- • You only ever recharge your own line in your own country and your bank doesn't charge fees → cards are simpler.
- • You don't already hold any crypto. Buying $20 of crypto to spend $20 of airtime is not worth it (exchange fees eat the savings).

Why pay for a phone top-up with crypto?

Which crypto has the lowest fees?
